Florida Senator Files Bill to Increase Marijuana Research in the State

Florida Drugs Marijuana

Senator Bill Galvano introduced a bill to create a marijuana research coalition in Florida. If Senate Bill 1472 (SB1472) is adopted, it will increase research and provide scientific data regarding marijuana.

The panel would consist of seven embers, according to First Coast News. The purpose of the research will be to determine proper dosage practices and determining a proper state policy for ordering medical marijuana. Results of this study will provide valuable information for further educating doctors, lawmakers and civilians on marijuana.

Senator Galvano said, “Right now, there is anecdotal evidence suggesting the positive benefits medicinal cannabis can have on patients in certain circumstances, but this legislation will help the State of Florida advance the science and research around cannabis as a treatment option for a variety of medical conditions.”

Thomas Sellers of the Moffitt Cancer Center said, “We are excited to partner with Sen. Galvano in support of this important legislation that will expand the research opportunities available to medical experts in the state to provide empirical evidence on the potential benefits and harms of medical cannabis.”

Those sitting on the panel would do so voluntarily. Reimbursement for travel expenses is allowed. The meetings would be at least semi-annually. The coalition would have to submit a budget for approval as funding from state-backed grants will be the funding source.

Senator Galvano also said, “Florida is a leader in developing innovative health care solutions, and creating opportunities for researchers in our state to responsibly inform new medicines and treatment options is a top priority.”
