Daytona Beach’s County Decriminalizes Marijuana Possession

Daytona Beach Marijuana

Volusia County city officials voted to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Daytona Beach, the infamous spring break and NASCAR racing city, resides inside of Volusia County. Police officers will be given the ability to decide whether or not to arrest adults possessing marijuana, News 6 reports.

Those possessing 20 grams or less of marijuana will either be ticketed or arrested, at the discretion of the responding officer(s). The new policy would result with a $100 fine in lieu of a misdemeanor charge and an arrest.

One county council member, Josh Wagner, claims that the war on drugs did not work. He says it only filled the jails.

If those being questioned about their marijuana possession become belligerent or insubordinate, an arrest is likely to take place. Full compliance is the best option.

The new ordinance goes into effect on April 1st. The ordinance covers unincorporated Volusia, and includes the beaches.
